Arbor Day Arbor Day is an American holiday that encourages the planting and care of trees. It was founded by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1872. When he and his wife moved from Detroit, Michigan, into the treeless prairie of Nebraska Territory in 1854, they missed the shade of trees.
