In ancient times tea was used for medicinal purposes. The Chinese have a saying: 'Firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar and tea are the seven necessities to begin a day.' A simple Chinese meal is always finished off with tea. Tea drinking is for refreshment.

Tea tasting has cultural meaning in China. The Chinese people drink tea for refreshment, but the tea they choose to drink has different symbolic meanings. Tea and and what it is served in should match surroundings such as breeze, bright moon, pines, bamboo, plums and snow. All these show the ultimate goal of Chinese culture: the harmonious unity of human beings with nature.

It is Chinese tradition to keep birds. Every morning old men take their birds to the park, hang them in trees and visit with their friends.
