China's Flag

United States of America Flag

China's national flag was adopted in September, 1949. It was first flown officially in Tiananmen Square on October 1, 1949. This is the day the People's Republic of China was founded.

The first official flag of the United States of America was adopted on June 14, 1777. Since then the flag has undergone many changes.

China's rectangular flag has a red field with five golden-yellow stars. The stars each have five points. The star on the left is larger than the other four. The stars are located in the upper left hand corner of the flag.

Our rectangular flag has seven red stripes and six white stripes. The fifty white stars are in a part of the flag that is blue. The flag currently consists of fifty stars. The stars have five points.

The colors symbolize the following:

  • Red: communist revolution and traditional color of the Chinese people

  • Gold: bright future for the Chinese people

At the time that our flag was adopted the colors did not have any specific meaning. The colors were significant for the Great Seal of 1782. The colors mean the following:
  • White: purity and innocence
  • Red: valor and bravery
  • Blue: vigilance, perseverance, and justice

The stars symbolize the following:

  • Large Star: Communist Party (which rules China)

  • Smaller Stars: the ethnic groups of the country. The number of stars, five, is an important number in China.

The stars and stripes symbolize the following:
  • Stars: the heavens and the fifty states
  • Stripes: rays of light coming from the sun and the original thirteen colonies

-from Ben's Guide to U.S. Government

Each day the flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset during a simple ceremony in Beijing at Tiananmen Square.

Each day, all across our country, the United States of America flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. This shows our national pride.
