The Pearl Market is a most amazing place. It took us awhile to find the spot we were looking for as we were totally on our own...no guide to guide us!!! We took a taxi to the area Pam thought she had visited on her last trip and then fended for ourselves...stroller, baby, and all!!! |

Traffic lights were pretty interesting. They counted down the seconds left before the light would change...not that anyone really payed attention!!! |

This vendor was selling little pecking chicks, which we just had to buy! |
|
This father was very interested in chatting with us, and yes, having his son show off the English he is learning in school. We were happy to oblige. |
I was amazed, everywhere we traveled in China, to see the hard-working people. |

Though we didn't want to buy any fruit, this mother and son were willing to let us take their picture. |

As with everything, pearls are symbolic in China. In China, the pearl symbolizes "genius in obscurity", or in our words, a diamond in the rough. When you really think about the fact that a beautiful pearl is hidden inside an unattractive oyster, the saying makes perfect sense. Because of its pale, shimmering hue, the pearl has lunar, and therefore feminine, associations. Pearls also symbolize patience, purity and peace. |

These children were playing a game that looked like Parcheesi. Their mom was working at one of the markets. |
You can't even imagine the multitude of pearls at the market. This is a very small sampling. |
When choosing your pearls, you are shown strands of 3 different qualities. |
|
Once you make your choice, the pearls are strung before your very eyes! |
Along the way you pick the clasps and fit that suit your taste. |
