Deputy Agustin Gonzalez Joins Red Creek CSD as School Resource Officer

The Red Creek Central School District recently welcomed Deputy Agustin Gonzalez as its new School Resource Officer (SRO), reinforcing the district’s ongoing commitment to student safety, well-being, and a positive school environment.

Deputy Gonzalez brings about 27 years of law enforcement experience to Red Creek. His career began as a New York State Correction Officer before he joined the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. He then returned to New York State and worked for the Rochester Police Department for 20 years.

After retiring in 2024, Gonzalez chose to remain active in law enforcement by joining the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in a part-time capacity. This allowed him to maintain his police certification while continuing to serve the community.

“When I heard that Red Creek had an opening, I came here a few times on a part-time basis and realized if I was going to go back to work full-time, I wanted to come back to a school district like Red Creek,” he said. “Once I met the students and administration, it made my decision easier.”

Gonzalez explained that the SRO role is unique, as it extends beyond traditional law enforcement. While responding to incidents is one component, the position also focuses on prevention, education, and relationship-building. As an informal counselor, he works to build trust with students. He also provides educational presentations on topics such as conflict resolution, vaping awareness, crime prevention, and overall safety.

In addition, Gonzalez works with the school district, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Police to ensure the district is prepared for emergencies.

One of the aspects that drew Gonzalez to Red Creek was the welcoming atmosphere he experienced throughout the school community.

“At Red Creek, most of the students say good morning and seem very pleasant and happy,” Gonzalez said. “It feels as though the staff and administration go out of their way to create a good environment, and I can feel it walking in. It’s a really nice feeling.”

“Throughout the search process, our priority was finding someone who would be a strong presence in our schools and a positive support for students,” said Matthew VanOrman, Superintendent of Schools. “Deputy Gonzalez brings a depth of experience and a clear commitment to school safety that will be a great asset to our district.”

When he’s not at Red Creek, Gonzalez enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, working out, and reading. He has also recently discovered a passion for cooking, particularly preparing Puerto Rican dishes.

As the new SRO, Gonzalez is looking forward to becoming even more involved in the school community.

“I’m here to support the children in any way I can,” he said. “I know they need to have people around who are patient and good listeners. That’s who I am, and they’re safe with me.”
