Red Creek Middle School Students See Stories Come to Life at ECHOES Creative Writing Showcase

The Red Creek Central School District auditorium was recently filled with cheers, laughter, and applause as middle school students watched actors bring student-created pieces to the stage during the REV Theatre Company’s ECHOES Creative Writing Showcase.

Earlier in the school year, sixth through eighth grade students at Red Creek Middle School- along with students from schools across New York State- participated in classroom workshops led by actors from the REV Theatre Company. During these sessions, students explored storytelling techniques, which were used to create their own original creative writing pieces.

Thousands of student-written pieces were later sent to the REV Theatre Company, where each one was reviewed. From those entries, a select few were woven into an original 50-minute production performed at schools across the region.

When the showcase arrived at Red Creek, students responded enthusiastically as actors brought their peers’ writing to life. An especially loud cheer erupted when the actors introduced a scene written by sixth-grader Ruby L.: “Day in the Life of a Cat.” Students continued to follow along as the performance featured a variety of poems, songs, stories and skits written by young authors.

Following the performance, a brief awards ceremony was held in the auditorium to celebrate the talented writers from Red Creek Middle School. Ten students earned honorable mention recognition for their submissions and were invited to the stage to receive certificates. Students receiving honorable mention were: Cole C., Matthew D., Isla F., Elizabeth F., Delilah K., Kensley R., Clinton S., Kadon S., Sage W., and Carson W.

Ruby was then recognized for her selected piece and presented with a certificate and a plaque. Before students departed, she was able to celebrate with her family members in attendance.

The ECHOES Creative Writing Competition and Showcase encourages students to develop a strong storyline, write with vivid detail, and share their unique perspectives on topical issues.
